Yen Slips Toward 158 as BOJ Dissent Keeps Rate-Hike Path Uncertain

The Japanese yen weakened toward 158 per dollar as traders reassessed the pace of future Bank of Japan tightening after last week's rate increase.

The Japanese yen remained under pressure on Tuesday as traders questioned whether the Bank of Japan can tighten policy quickly enough to narrow the interest-rate gap with the United States. USD/JPY traded around 157.70 after the yen fell for a third consecutive session. The move followed last week's BOJ rate increase, which took the policy rate to 1.25%, but two dissenting policymakers argued for a more cautious approach. The policy split has become an important signal for currency markets. While the BOJ has moved away from its earlier ultra-loose stance, investors are less certain about how quickly another increase could arrive. Market pricing was showing only about a 30% probability of a move to 1.5% in October. Japanese intervention risk is another factor limiting the yen's decline. Reuters reported that Japanese authorities had checked dollar-yen rates last Friday, a step that markets often associate with heightened monitoring before possible intervention. The US side of the rate equation remains supportive of the dollar. Markets were pricing a higher probability of another Federal Reserve increase, keeping the US-Japan yield gap wide. MarketMindFX View: USD/JPY is now centered on the 158.00 area. A sustained break above it would keep attention on intervention risk, while a retreat below 157.00 would indicate renewed demand for the yen.
