USD/JPY Consolidates as Traders Weigh Intervention Risk

USD/JPY is holding below recent highs as the market keeps one eye on the risk of official intervention to slow the yen's decline.

USD/JPY is consolidating below its recent highs, with traders increasingly mindful of the risk that Japanese authorities could step in to slow further yen weakness. Verbal warnings from officials have picked up in frequency, a pattern that has historically preceded periods of actual market intervention. That backdrop is keeping momentum traders cautious about chasing the pair much higher without confirmation that policymakers are willing to tolerate further declines in the currency. At the same time, the underlying interest rate differential between the US and Japan continues to favor a stronger dollar, creating a genuine tug-of-war between fundamentals and intervention risk. Until one side wins out clearly, expect choppier, two-way price action rather than a smooth continuation of the recent trend.
