Silver Stabilizes Near $60 as Traders Reassess Fed Rate Path

Silver recovered modestly after a sharp decline as traders weighed the Federal Reserve's rate outlook, elevated Treasury yields and persistent industrial demand.
Silver steadied on Thursday after coming under heavy pressure earlier in the week as a stronger U.S. dollar and higher Treasury yields reduced demand for precious metals. Reuters reported spot silver up 0.4% at $60.39 an ounce by 0101 GMT, while the metal remained well below its recent highs.
The main macroeconomic driver is the Federal Reserve's policy outlook. Minutes from the September meeting showed that policymakers were divided over the need for further rate increases, with some officials concerned that energy-related price shocks could keep inflation elevated.
Markets are currently assigning a relatively low probability to another rate increase later in October, while expectations for a December move remain substantially higher. Higher interest rates generally weigh on non-yielding assets such as silver because they increase the opportunity cost of holding precious metals.
Silver also has an industrial component that differentiates it from gold. Demand from electronics, solar technology and other manufacturing applications can provide support even when investment demand is weak. That industrial exposure, however, also makes silver sensitive to changes in expectations for global economic activity.
The recent decline has therefore reflected two competing forces: tighter financial conditions on one side and underlying industrial demand on the other. If Treasury yields remain elevated and the dollar stays firm, silver could remain volatile even if physical demand remains relatively resilient.
Reuters reported that analysts were looking for silver to remain under pressure after the recent deterioration in technical patterns, with the mid-to-high $50s identified as an area to watch. That level should be treated as a market reference rather than a guaranteed target.
MarketMindFX View: Silver's next direction will likely depend on the balance between U.S. rate expectations and evidence of industrial demand. A softer dollar or lower yields could improve the metal's appeal, while renewed hawkish Fed pricing could keep pressure on prices.
