Silver’s $66 Crossroads: Why the Dollar and CPI Could Decide XAG/USD’s Next Break
Silver is holding near $66 as a softer dollar provides support, but the metal remains trapped between key technical levels. Friday’s U.S. CPI could determine whether XAG/USD challenges $71-$73 or risks a deeper move toward $63 and $61.
## Silver’s $66 Crossroads
Silver is sitting at an important technical and macro crossroads. XAG/USD is hovering around $66, roughly in the middle of its monthly range, as weakness in the U.S. dollar provides support ahead of Friday’s U.S. CPI report.
The next major move may depend on whether inflation data changes the market’s expectations for the Federal Reserve.
### The dollar is doing the heavy lifting
Silver’s recent resilience is not being driven by a single bullish catalyst. Instead, the metal is benefiting from a softer dollar while investors reassess U.S. monetary-policy and fiscal risks.
HSBC analysts point to weaker U.S. data, persistent inflation concerns, questions over policy credibility and political risks as factors weighing on the dollar. At the same time, concerns about U.S. fiscal sustainability remain a longer-term risk for the greenback.
For a dollar-priced asset such as silver, sustained dollar weakness can provide an important tailwind.
### But $66 is not a breakout
The technical picture remains neutral rather than decisively bullish. XAG/USD is near $66, with the monthly range broadly extending from around $63 to $71.
Daily momentum is also mixed, with RSI near the neutral 50 area and MACD slightly below zero. That suggests traders are waiting for a catalyst before committing to a stronger directional move.
The first upside hurdle is around $67.40. Above that, silver would face resistance in the $71.12-$71.56 zone, followed by the 200-day moving average near $72.95.
### The bearish level traders cannot ignore
The downside setup is equally important. Friday’s low near $64.75 is the first nearby support, while the $63 area represents the more important technical floor.
A decisive break below $63 would strengthen a bearish Head & Shoulders interpretation and could expose the August low around $60.87.
That makes the $63-$73 zone particularly important: silver has room to move substantially in either direction before the broader technical structure is resolved.
### Friday’s CPI could provide the trigger
The U.S. CPI report is likely to be the key short-term catalyst. A softer inflation reading could weaken the dollar and strengthen expectations for easier Fed policy, potentially helping silver challenge the $67.40 and $71 resistance zones.
A hotter CPI print could push U.S. yields and the dollar higher. In that scenario, silver could struggle to hold $64.75 and eventually retest the $63 support area.
The important point is that CPI does not need to be dramatically strong or weak. A small surprise could be enough to break silver out of its current range because positioning and momentum are relatively balanced.
### MarketMindFX view
The most interesting silver trade right now is a **range-break strategy rather than a prediction of direction**.
Above $67.40, traders can begin watching whether momentum develops toward $71-$73. Below $64.75, attention shifts toward $63, where a confirmed break could open the door to $60.87.
Until one of those levels gives way, the $66 area remains more of a decision zone than a trend signal.
**Bottom line:** Silver is being supported by dollar weakness, but the metal still needs a catalyst to escape its technical range. Friday’s U.S. CPI could provide that catalyst. A softer inflation surprise may revive the bullish case, while a hotter reading could expose the downside—and make $63 the most important level on the chart.
