Silver Market Faces Rate Headwinds as September Closes
Silver is entering the end of September under pressure from higher yields and a stronger dollar, while industrial demand remains an important long-term driver.
Silver entered the final week of September under pressure as higher US yields and a stronger dollar reduced demand for precious metals.
XAG/USD was around $61.65 on September 28, down more than 4% in early trading. The decline followed a weekly loss in silver and came alongside a broader retreat across precious metals.
The immediate pressure is linked to expectations for further Federal Reserve tightening. Higher interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding metals that do not generate interest income.
Silver also differs from gold because of its industrial role. Electronics, solar equipment and manufacturing activity can influence demand independently of investment flows.
The September 30 PCE report and October 2 jobs data will therefore matter for silver as well as the dollar and Treasury yields. A shift toward lower-rate expectations could reduce one of silver's current headwinds.
MarketMindFX View: The $60-$62 region is an important area for XAG/USD after the latest decline. Traders should monitor real yields, the dollar and industrial-demand signals rather than focusing on precious metals in isolation.
