Gold takes a breather after climbing to a three-month high

Gold pulled back from a fresh three-month high as traders booked profits and the U.S. Dollar recovered modestly, while Treasury buybacks, ETF inflows and persistent fiscal concerns continued to support the broader bullish outlook.
Gold (XAU/USD) came under modest selling pressure on Tuesday after reaching a fresh three-month high of $4,697 during Asian trading hours. Profit-taking emerged after the recent rally pushed momentum indicators into overbought territory. At the time of writing, Gold traded around $4,635 after falling as low as $4,618 intraday.
A modest recovery in the U.S. Dollar also limited demand for the dollar-denominated metal. The U.S. Dollar Index, which measures the Greenback against a basket of major currencies, traded near 99.02 after falling to 98.56 last week, its lowest level since mid-May.
## Treasury buybacks continue to support Gold
Despite the short-term pullback, the broader fundamental environment remains supportive for Gold.
Developments in the U.S. Treasury market have renewed concerns about the long-term purchasing power of the Dollar. Market participants are closely watching plans that could significantly increase Treasury bond buybacks between September and November in an effort to contain longer-term borrowing costs.
The prospect of increased Treasury buying has helped strengthen demand for precious metals as investors reassess the U.S. fiscal outlook and the possibility of continued currency debasement.
Concerns surrounding America's growing debt burden and fiscal position have added to investor interest in Gold as a store of value.
## Gold ETF inflows strengthen
Demand from Gold-backed exchange-traded funds also improved during the previous week.
World Gold Council data showed that global Gold ETFs attracted approximately $3.52 billion in net inflows, equivalent to about 23.6 tonnes of Gold.
Year-to-date inflows reached roughly $21.34 billion, or 116.1 tonnes, with particularly strong demand coming from investors in Asia and Europe.
The renewed ETF demand provides another source of support for bullion as investors increase exposure to precious metals amid economic and geopolitical uncertainty.
## Iran tensions remain in focus
Geopolitical developments in the Middle East remain an important source of market volatility.
Iranian officials said the country was fully prepared to respond to additional U.S. sanctions following a broader campaign aimed at restricting financial support for Tehran.
However, oil markets showed a relatively muted response to the latest developments.
West Texas Intermediate crude traded sharply lower on the day, although prices remained well above levels seen before the recent geopolitical escalation.
Elevated energy prices continue to create inflation uncertainty and may complicate the Federal Reserve's future interest-rate decisions.
## Traders look ahead to U.S. PCE inflation
U.S. economic data remains an important driver for Gold prices.
The latest ADP Employment Change four-week average increased to 11.75K from 9.5K previously, offering a modest signal of improvement in labor-market conditions.
Attention now turns to Wednesday's U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index, the Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation.
A softer-than-expected PCE reading could increase expectations for a more accommodative Federal Reserve policy stance and potentially weaken the U.S. Dollar, which would generally be supportive for Gold.
A stronger inflation reading could support Treasury yields and the Dollar, creating short-term pressure on bullion.
## Jackson Hole speech another key catalyst
Markets are also preparing for Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday.
Traders will closely examine his comments for clues about the outlook for inflation, economic growth and interest rates.
Any indication that the Federal Reserve is becoming more concerned about slowing growth or elevated long-term borrowing costs could influence expectations for future monetary policy and generate significant moves in both the Dollar and Gold.
## Gold technical outlook remains bullish
From a technical perspective, XAU/USD continues to maintain a strong bullish structure despite Tuesday's pullback.
Gold remains above its 50-day, 100-day and 200-day Simple Moving Averages, which are clustered between approximately $4,185 and $4,520.
The alignment of these moving averages continues to support the broader uptrend.
The 14-day Relative Strength Index is near 71, indicating that Gold has entered overbought territory. This suggests the market may be vulnerable to short-term consolidation or profit-taking after the recent advance.
The Moving Average Convergence Divergence indicator remains firmly positive, showing that bullish momentum is still intact despite stretched conditions.
## Key resistance and support levels
The first major resistance level is located around $4,700, close to Tuesday's three-month high.
A sustained break above $4,700 could open the way toward the next important resistance area around $4,850.
On the downside, the 200-day moving average near $4,520 provides the first significant support zone.
Below that level, additional support can be found near the 100-day moving average around $4,379 and the 50-day moving average close to $4,186.
A deeper correction could bring the psychologically important $4,000 area back into focus.
For now, Gold's broader trend remains constructive, but overbought conditions suggest traders may continue to see periods of consolidation before the next major directional move.
