Gold Drops Below $4,200 as Higher Oil and Yields Pressure Bullion

Gold fell sharply as higher oil prices and stronger expectations for another Federal Reserve rate increase lifted the dollar and Treasury yields.
Gold prices fell sharply on September 28 as higher energy prices, a firmer dollar and rising Treasury yields reduced demand for the non-yielding metal.
Spot gold was around $4,188.84 an ounce in early trading, while gold futures were near $4,221.12. Silver also weakened, showing that the pressure was broad across precious metals.
The renewed US-Iran standoff has pushed oil prices higher and increased concern that energy inflation could remain persistent. That has strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve may need to keep policy restrictive.
Markets were pricing roughly a 65% probability of another US rate increase in October, according to Investing.com. Higher expected rates generally increase the opportunity cost of holding bullion.
Gold still has support from investment demand. ETF holdings increased by about 50 tonnes during September, showing that some investors continue to use bullion as a portfolio hedge despite the higher-yield environment.
MarketMindFX View: XAU/USD is testing the $4,200 area after a weekly decline of more than 2%. The next major market signals are the August PCE report and September employment data.
