Euro’s Oil Test: Why EUR/USD Is Defying the Energy Shock

EUR/USD is holding above 1.1600 ahead of the ECB decision even as oil trades above $100. The euro’s resilience is creating a fresh FX question: can ECB tightening offset the growth hit from higher energy costs?
## Euro’s Oil Test: Why EUR/USD Is Defying the Energy Shock
EUR/USD is holding near 1.1640 as traders prepare for the European Central Bank’s policy decision, but the backdrop is unusually complicated: oil has surged above $100 while inflation pressure is building across Europe.
### The euro is ignoring its usual oil sensitivity
Higher energy prices normally create a headwind for the euro because Europe is heavily exposed to imported energy costs. Yet the single currency has remained firm near two-week highs.
The reason is the policy response. Markets expect the ECB to raise rates again as inflation risks intensify, making the euro more attractive from an interest-rate perspective.
### ECB versus Fed: the real FX battle
The next major EUR/USD move may depend less on oil itself and more on how central banks react to it.
A hawkish ECB combined with softer U.S. inflation could strengthen the euro. Conversely, a hotter U.S. inflation reading could revive Federal Reserve tightening expectations and put the dollar back on the offensive.
### Key levels
EUR/USD is holding above 1.1600, keeping the short-term structure constructive. A sustained move higher would reinforce the bullish case, while a break back below 1.1600 would warn that energy and growth concerns are starting to overwhelm the ECB rate advantage.
**MarketMindFX view:** EUR/USD is becoming a policy-divergence trade. If the ECB prioritizes inflation control while the Fed becomes less hawkish, the euro could remain surprisingly resilient even with oil above $100.
