Dollar’s Oil-Fueled Comeback: Why Today’s CPI Could Reset the FX Map

The dollar has regained ground as oil prices lift inflation risks and Treasury yields approach 5%. Friday’s U.S. CPI could decide whether the greenback’s rebound turns into a broader FX trend.

The U.S. dollar is back in focus after a sharp shift in the macro backdrop. Rising energy prices are pushing inflation expectations higher, Treasury yields remain elevated and traders are preparing for a potentially market-moving U.S. CPI report. The dollar index was holding near 99 on September 11 after gaining the previous session. Reuters reported that renewed Middle East energy-supply concerns pushed oil and bond yields higher, increasing the market-implied probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike next week. This creates an important FX setup. A hotter-than-expected CPI reading could reinforce the case for tighter U.S. monetary policy and extend dollar strength against currencies such as the euro, Australian dollar and pound. A softer inflation number, however, could challenge the recent rebound by reducing pressure on Treasury yields and weakening the dollar's rate advantage. The euro is particularly sensitive to the shift. EUR/USD recently slipped after the ECB raised rates by 25 basis points, while the dollar recovered as investors reassessed the U.S. inflation outlook. The key question is whether the dollar's move above the 99 area can develop into a sustained breakout or fade after the CPI release. MarketMindFX View: The most interesting trade today is not simply whether the dollar rises or falls, but whether the CPI result changes the interest-rate differential behind the move. A hotter CPI could keep USD demand strong, while a cooler reading may bring buyers back into EUR/USD and other risk-sensitive currencies. Key FX levels to monitor: DXY around 99 remains the immediate psychological zone. For EUR/USD, the 1.1600 area is important near-term support, while a recovery above the recent 1.1630–1.1650 region would signal that dollar momentum is losing strength. Oil remains the wildcard. Brent above $100 can keep inflation expectations elevated and complicate central-bank decisions across the G10 FX market. Traders should therefore watch CPI, Treasury yields and crude prices together rather than treating the dollar move as a standalone signal. Source: Reuters and FXStreet, September 11, 2026.
