Diesel Supply Pressure Persists Despite Recovery in Middle East Crude Exports

The IEA says recovering Middle East crude exports have not resolved diesel supply constraints, keeping refined fuels in focus.

Diesel shortages remain a concern for energy markets despite a significant recovery in Middle East crude exports, according to the International Energy Agency's latest statement following the October 2 G7 leaders' meeting.

Refined fuels face continuing constraints

The IEA said refined-product flows remain restricted. It also identified attacks on Russian refineries as an additional source of pressure on diesel availability.

Emergency stocks provide support

Approximately 325 million barrels had been released under the emergency action announced in March, out of an original commitment of 400 million barrels. The agency said these releases helped address the supply shortfall.

Monday's market reaction

On October 5, The Wall Street Journal reported December Brent futures at $101.59 a barrel and December WTI at $88.54 in early trading. These are reported intraday prices, not closing levels or live quotes.

Market implications

Analysis: Improving crude availability may not immediately resolve shortages of processed fuels. Refinery operations and product shipments therefore remain important alongside headline oil prices.

Sources: IEA statement, October 2, 2026; WSJ market report, October 5, 2026.

Image: Oil refinery in Houston 2018b, Antony-22 / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0.
