Canadian Dollar Extends Losing Streak as Oil and Rate Spreads Weigh

The Canadian dollar is under renewed pressure as weaker oil prices and a widening US-Canada yield gap keep USD/CAD elevated near 1.43.
The Canadian dollar extended its recent decline on Monday as softer crude prices and a widening interest-rate differential between the United States and Canada kept pressure on the currency. USD/CAD was around 1.4257 in the latest Reuters market update, while the loonie remained close to its weakest levels in more than a year.
The Canadian currency has been particularly sensitive to the relationship between domestic and US yields. The Canadian two-year yield was about 157 basis points below the comparable US rate, the widest gap since February 2025. A wider spread can reduce the relative appeal of Canadian-dollar assets.
Oil is another important transmission channel. Canada is a major energy exporter, so lower crude prices can weaken expected export income and reduce one source of support for the Canadian dollar. US crude was recently around $91.40 a barrel after the G7 announced plans to release up to 100 million barrels of crude and diesel from emergency reserves.
The softer US employment report has complicated the outlook rather than eliminating pressure on the loonie. Slower US job growth has reduced expectations for an October Federal Reserve rate increase, but US yields remain well above Canadian yields and broad US-dollar demand continues to weigh on the Canadian currency.
For USD/CAD, the 1.42 area has become an important reference after the pair recently reached about 1.4263, its highest level in 18 months. A sustained move above that zone would keep the broader dollar-uptrend in focus, while a recovery in oil prices and narrowing yield spreads would provide conditions for a Canadian-dollar rebound.
MarketMindFX View: The loonie's weakness is being driven by several factors at once—oil, relative yields and broad US-dollar demand. The next directional move will depend on whether those forces continue to reinforce each other or begin to diverge.
